The €2 billion redevelopment of the Cork docklands is to receive national backing after Taoiseach Bertie Ahern announced a new national steering forum to help convert the area into a new centre for Cork city. Mr Ahern told a Fianna Fáil function in Cork last night attended by more than 500 people that the major development of the docklands area was one of the most significant projects to drive Cork's economic development. "I know that significant work has already been carried out by Cork City Council and the various interested parties in advancing this flagship project. This under-utilised section of Cork has enormous potential."
