Steel spire ready to rise
A landmark Spire of Hope on top of St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast is scheduled to be completed by the end of January, following its final approval by the cathedral's board. According to the latest edition of the Cathedral Digest, the 40-metre spire will be made of stainless steel by a Swiss company, and will complement in height the Celtic Cross on the north side of the building, which is thought to be the largest of its kind in Ireland. Dean of Belfast Dr Houston McKelvey said he was delighted that the project would go ahead. Dean McKelvey said : "Not only will the new Spire of Hope complete the Cathedral, but it will also add a most distinctive piece of iconic public art to the Belfast skyline, and it will be illuminated at night."
