Plea to save philosopher's castle birthplace before collapse

The Sunday Independent

The 600-year-old castle birthplace of Ireland's greatest philosopher is facing collapse unless a State grant is provided to save it, the owner has warned. Dysart Castle, in Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, is the childhood home of the 18th-century philosopher and writer George Berkeley, after whom the city of Berkeley, California was named. The castle's owner, renowned artist Ramie Leahy, says the national monument should be not be allowed to fall into ruin as it is a hugely important part of Ireland's heritage.
