A contemporary approach to traditional design

Former Bank

A new office block at 2 Haddington Road in Dublin 4 will be completed at the end of the year. Built adjoining the former Bank of Ireland building on Baggot Street Bridge, the new block enjoys a prominent location right at the heart of Dublin's business core. The new 1400 sq m building comprises three storeys of office accommodation (900 sq m) over an extended ground floor restaurant (360 sq m). "The design of the new building is contemporary but will create strong links in form and colour to the existing historic building," Michael Freaney of Gilroy McMahon Architects comments. "Red sandstone is used for the most part to contrast with the brick of the existing building. The strong vertical elements of the existing building are mirrored in a contemporary way by the vertical staircores of the extension. "The horizontal banding is picked up with the timber louvres and steel structure forming a richly textured layer on the new building." The architect believes that the new building will not compete for prominence with the old building.
