Arts Council advice sought on changes to Cobh cathedral

The Sunday Business Post

The Arts Council has been asked to give its views on the controversial proposed redevelopment of St Colman's Cathedral in Cobh, Co Cork. The planning board asked the Arts Council for its views under a section of the Planning and Development Act 2000 which permits the board to ask any group for its submissions or observations "in the interests of justice". The cathedral, designed in the Gothic revival style by English architect Edward Pugin, was completed in 1919. It was restored in 1992 but the sanctuary was left untouched. In 1998, Bishop John Magee told a public meeting that no changes would be made without the consent of the people of the diocese.
