In conjunction with Westmeath Arts, Architecture & Heritage Offices Westmeath County Council in association with the Arts Council, are inviting applications for the post of Architect in Residence to work with schools in Westmeath. The duration of this project shall be of a period of 6 months commencing January 2006. The purpose of the residency is to explore the art form of Architecture with an emphasis on awareness and perception of the built environment.
The project aims to develop knowledge, appreciation and awareness of architecture as an art form among schoolchildren in the County, while engaging creatively in the process, drawing on the architectural heritage of Westmeath. It also aims to encourage students to develop a better visual awareness of their cities, towns and countryside and to challenge them to question, understand and re-imagine the built environment in their communities that is generally taken for granted.
The successful architects specific interests and expertise will determine the precise scope of the work of the programme. Westmeath County Council is committed to supporting the Architect in Residence to create their own work and are keen to support new ways or ideas the architect might have in developing an interest in their chosen field within the wider community as part of their residency.
The Architect is expected to provide no more than 20 hours per week to the scheme (including travelling time within the County) and may involve evening and weekend work in consultation with Westmeath County Council.
Applicants should forward a CV and submit a written proposal of no more than one A4 page outlining possible approaches to the residency. Candidates must also submit a Portfolio of work including realised and unrealised work. Candidates may be short-listed for interview on this basis. Selection of candidates for appointment shall be based on an interview. Closing date for receipt of applications is Friday 16th December 2005.
