Developer who knocked historic church could face €200,000 fine

The Irish Independent

A developer who demolished most of an 18th century church contrary to planning permission could face fines of up to €200,000 and up to two years in jail. Cork City Council yesterday confirmed that it was seeking legal advice in relation to the destruction of the Capuchin South Friary, off Sullivan's Quay, Cork, by contractors working for Eric Treacy who is building a student housing scheme. The main part of the church was demolished on Wednesday, in breach of planning permission for a scheme which required the refurbishment and incorporation of the chapel into the housing development. However, all that remains of the church is one wall and part of the roof. Tax relief for the scheme could also be withdrawn.
