The shortlisting of Dublin's Spire for a prestigious architecture award is a "feather in the cap" for the controversial O'Connell Street sculpture and a vote of confidence in the decision to sanction the project, it was claimed last night. The 400ft structure is the first Irish project to be nominated for the coveted Stirling Prize and is second favourite behind the London "Gherkin" skyscraper to win the competition. Dublin City Council is also getting ready to cash in, with a line of souvenir merchandise and T-shirts ready to hit the streets before Christmas.
