€475m city project is 'pure theatre'

The Irish Independent

A €475M docklands development unveiled as "an iconic masterpiece" yesterday will feature a Broadway-style theatre as its centrepiece. The 2000-seater Dublin theatre, which will feature shows like 'Cats' and 'Phantom of the Opera', will be integrated into a large retail and commercial development with cultural outlets, shops and offices as well as a luxury hotel off Grand Canal Quay. It is hoped the Grand Canal Square development will become a new urban village for Dublin city like a microcosm of the city centre in one area. Renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, who won the competition to redevelop the World Trade Centre in New York after 9/11, has come up with the dramatic design for the new theatre. Speaking at the launch of the project yesterday, Mr Libeskind said that, like Barcelona was a few years ago, Dublin today was probably the model for developing urban spaces. Architecture could act as a magnet for the public.
