Harland & Wolff cranes listed as monument

RTE News

The famous cranes at Belfast's Harland and Wolff shipyard, which dominate the city's skyline, have been listed as historic monuments to ensure their preservation. The cranes, known as Samson and Goliath, were built between 1969 and 1974 by the German firm Krupp, and were used in the construction of ships and oil tankers at the yard. Little work is carried out there now, and many of the buildings and docks around the cranes are due for redevelopment in a project to be known as 'Titanic Quarter'. The Stormont Minister, Angela Smith, said listing the cranes as historic monuments would protect an important part of Belfast's heritage.
