Dermot Desmond, the multi-millionaire financier, is accustomed to getting his way. So he is naturally enraged that both Dublin City Council and An Bord Pleanála have refused permission to retain elements of his lavish refurbishment of Sybil Connolly's house, Number 71 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. Since Mr Desmond purchased the Georgian house in July 2000, it has been the subject of no less than five planning applications.
