Mercy call to spare landmark from axe

The Irish Independent

An historic wine merchant's house with strong links to the French revolution is in danger from the developer's guillotine. Heritage campaigners want the building in Dingle, Co Kerry - to which the doomed French Queen Marie Antoinette was to have escaped in 1792 - to be made a listed site. The house, known as The Rice House, after the Dingle wine merchant whose son Count James Louis Rice was central to the plan to rescue the Queen, is owned by Udaras na Gaeltachta and is currently for sale.
