Designing homes around people, not parking

The Irish Times

To curb social problems experienced in some developments, it's time to create communities where people can get to know, and not just drive past, each other. Joyriding, loud music from next door and people urinating on doorsteps are just some of the types of anti-social behaviour that many of us have experienced. While such conduct can be put down to various social issues, much of it can also be exacerbated by poor design, which can actually help people get away with crime. Certain planners, local councils, property developers and architects are now addressing such problems and designing schemes that create a greater sense of community.
