The Hugh Lane Gallery, located in Charlemont House, is in line for a long-awaited €7.6 million extension which will be "nestled to its rear like a hidden surprise", says gallery director Barbara Dawson. The project, proposed by Dublin City Council, will involve the demolition of the former National Ballroom behind the adjacent houses, numbers 20 and 21 Parnell Square north, to make way for a two and three-storey over-basement extension to the modern art gallery.
