The Metro rail system for Dublin, part of it underground, will be up and running by 2007 - carrying 200m passengers a year. The ambitious project, which will cost a staggering euro7.2bn, was finally approved by the Government yesterday, 18 months after it was announced. It will be the biggest infrastructure project ever undertaken by the State, giving the capital a rapid transit underground system like those seen in other world capitals. The first phase, finally cleared yesterday, will involve a line from Dublin airport on the northside to the city centre, running to Shanganagh, near Bray, on the southside with a spur to Blanchardstown, and will be completed by 2006.
