Some time in the mid-1980s, the arbiters of style in Irish architecture turned their attention to a new wave of self-built homes. The appearance of one-off, DIY bungalows had been gaining momentum in rural areas since the early 1970s. They were largely inspired by Irish architect Jack Fitzsimons' book of house plans, Bungalow Bliss. The book provided detailed plans for the layout and exterior of what could be "your dream home" and spawned thousands of look-a-like constructions, often replacing existing traditional dwellings.
