The Irish government could build the long-awaited national conference centre itself, after the failure of several deals with the private sector. Jim McDaid, the tourism minister, is expected to tell his cabinet colleagues within the next month that the republic still needs a conference centre, but he would rather not tender the project a fourth time. The minister will instead propose that the government go it alone and build the Ł125m centre from its own resources.
