There was a time not so very long ago when every pub had to be fitted out in the obligatory `olde worlde' style, which included shelves of bottles, stoneware jars and old advertisements. That was fair enough, especially if the material was drink related. But, little by little, the fad for bric-a-brac demanded shelves of unreadable books, old sewing machines and any junk that looked antique-ish, regardless of its relevance to the business of the pub.
