Garden stands testimony to Ireland's freedom fighters

The Sunday Times

During the past 85 years, a garden in Dublin's city centre has twice marked a period of national rebirth. On Easter weekend 1916, the green patch off Parnell Square became the holding pen for a large band of prisoners herded together to spend the night in the open under armed guard. The captives were the remnants of those who had fought in the failed 1916 Easter Rising. Then in 1966, the Garden of Remembrance was opened on the same spot to commemorate the Rising's 50th anniversary and all those who died for Irish freedom.
