Awning of an era

Buildings can be sexy. All too plainly, most are not. But a newcomer on Grand Canal Quay in Dublin - the possessor of the most handsome, most exotic new face in Irish architecture - certainly is. What makes this building so alluring is that it is more than the usual architectural skin and bones stripped bare. This one dresses up whenever the sun comes out. "I always wanted to make a clear glass façade," says John Meagher of de Blacam and Meagher, the Dublin architectural practice. "In the traditional way, with awnings on." Draped in white fabric, the façade is undeniably sensual, almost tactile. As with couture, it is a matter of cut, of detail. Not to mention invention.
