Walking through Trinity College in the centre of Dublin can often seem like stepping back in time, but rarely is the experience so acute as it is when you encounter the little-known architectural marvel of the Loos bar. Ironically, it is less than 20 years old. What captures the imagination is that it is a re-creation of a showpiece of modernist Vienna: the American - or Kärntner - Bar that Adolf Loos designed and built in 1908 in a small street in the centre of the city, causing a sensation.
