An Taisce, the Irish national trust, has demanded that one of Dublin's most famous pubs undo alterations made to its celebrated Victorian interior. At Ryan's pub on Parkgate Street, which is listed for preservation, the new management has cut out part of the bar's 19th-century wood panelling. Earlier this month, carpenters took out part of the large "island" behind the horseshoe-shaped bar counter. Architectural protection laws introduced last January require planning permission for changes to the interiors of listed buildings if the character of the building is affected.
