Thanks to the foresight of Westmeath County Council, generous EU funding and the dedication of those who brought Belvedere House, gardens and park back into its prime, the midlands has an amenity that can proudly stand beside Powerscourt in Co Wicklow. Just as Powerscourt has the beautiful Wicklow mountains as a backdrop, so Belvedere has the striking Lough Ennell stretching away to the west. Powerscourt was designed by Richard Castle, the same architect who designed Belvedere in the 1740s, and both have fine terraced gardens and interesting follies.
