Ireland's circle of influence

The Sunday Times

Few architects are so admired as to have a prize named after them. Best known, perhaps, is the Stirling prize for the building of the year in Britain, created in memory of the late James Stirling. The Northern Ireland equivalent, presented by the Royal Society of Ulster Architects, is named in honour of Liam McCormick, who died in 1996. Last year, McCormick's poetic Church of St Aengus, built in 1967 by Lough Swilly at Burt, Co Donegal, topped a poll to find the Irish building of the 20th century.
