Our heritage is all around us

The Sunday Business Post

In a recent survey in which 1,400 members of the public participated., most people think our heritage consists of language, history and ancient monuments, but not our landscape, streetscapes or farmland. It found that most people think of ancient monuments, castles, language and history as heritage, while they regard landscape, streetscapes and farmland as not really part of heritage. People consider heritage not to be the everyday physical environment, of which they themselves are owners and which they could have a role in protecting, in other words. They think heritage is something possessed by other people, managed by the state and minded by bodies such as An Taisce.
