Inspired approach
Dublin corporation showed rare vision in seeking designs for two new bridges from the Swiss-based, Spanish-born architect-engineer Santiago Calatrava, but local interests are threatening its plans. The O'Connell Street improvements depend on two new river crossings: one to the west, at Blackhall Place, connecting Ellis Quay to Ushers Island, and another between Matt Talbot bridge and the East Link bridge, connecting Guild Street on the north side of the Liffey to Macken Street on the south side.
