Digging up our medieval past

The Sunday Business Post

Many of Dublin's newest apartment blocks have been erected in the area which originally constituted medieval Dublin. The recently completed apartments in Essex Street, in the west end of Temple Bar near Fishamble Street, are a good example. There are more in Back Lane and Bridge Street and others which lie just outside the medieval city walls, such as those in Ship Street. How many residents of these apartments are aware that they live in an area that was once so historic? They could be forgiven for not realising that the area around Christ Church Cathedral and the civic offices is the oldest part of Dublin, because there is nothing old left.
