Finance chiefs put brakes on £45m park heritage project

The Irish Independent

Department of Finance officials have put the brakes on a £45m prestige project to build a new government office near the Phoenix Park. The project was intended as the new headquarters for the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands. The building was to have been only the secon purpose built Government office in Dublin since the foundation of the State.

A design for the project had already been accepted by the Office of Public Works following a major international competition which brought submissions from over 60 top companies located around the world, including the UK, USA, Europe and the Far East. The winning design by a British company included plans for the accommodation of departmental staff and a major public utility role for the building. A public viewing platform offering views of the Phoenix Park and the city, an auditorium, a new library, a cafe, an exhibition centre and connecting links to the People's Garden in the park were included in the plans.
