£40m facelift for Smithfield Square

The Irish Independent

A new curved street and a ``bullet-shaped'' building are two of the architectural features of a new £40m mixed development being proposed for the north west half of Smithfield Square in Dublin. The development will play a key role in rejuvenation of Dublin's north inner city and will provide a key link between the Docklands/O'Connell St area with the National Museum and Phoenix Park. The schemes intends to retain the fruit and vegetable market as part of the site. Architect Patrick McCabe explains that this will lend colour and fragrances to the square. Four stories of residential apartments will be developed over the market.
