Portobello, Dublin

Like the Portobello area in London, Dublin’s Portobello area is named after the capture by Admiral Vernon of Porto Bello in the Gulf of Mexico from the Spanish in 1739. Originally there was a harbour here on the Grand Canal with an hotel operated by the canal company but which was largely filled in in 1948.
