Now named after the Grand Canal that opened in 1791 but previous to 1792 was Artichoke Road. In 1736 John Villiboise obtained a lease on land here where he erected a house and in the garden grew artichokes. The local inhabitants came to know it as "the artichoke" and eventually this name came to be applied to the road also. In 1836, a terrace of houses was built and named Wentworth Terrace after the Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Stafford.
