To date Poolbeg Station remains the only power station on the ESB system which is operated on two fuel sources, oil and gas, with equal plant efficiency. In addition to providing 1,020 Megawatts of electricity, it also provides Dublin with its two tallest landmarks - the distinctive red and white striped chimneys. The twin chimneys are 207 metres tall and can be seen from most parts of the city. They provide a dramatic focal point for the bay and signal the deep water shipping lane into the city port.
