Built to reclaim the lands of the North Lots from the tidal Liffey, the North Wall was for many years the departure point for the Irish Sea steam packets that took so many abroad as emigrants. For many years the area, has been used for railway freight yards and port facilities but with the expansion of the IFSC as far as Guild Street, it is expected that the area will be rejuvenated in the next few years.

The Point Depot (or Theatre) has been renovated from a railway shed and terminus for the Midland and Great Western Railway Company into a concert and exhibition venue. The former North Wall Railway Station is now used as offices for Iarnrod Eireann Freight but with the decline of their freight services, its future must be in doubt.
