The zoo was founded in 1830. In the 1980s, early 1990s a campaign was run to try and have the zoo closed because of its generally dilapidated and cramped conditions for the animals, many of whom exhibited signs of stress, Recent investment has resulted in a huge expansion of space and facilities for the animals. The zoo boasts of having bred the famous MGM lion.
