So named because of its proximity to the Court of Chancery, one of the four courts. Also called Lucy Lane and Mass Lane because of the Jesuit Church that was there until 1687, later becoming a Huguenot Chapel. Part of the street was also known as Mountrath Street after Charles Coote (died 1661), Earl of Mountrath.
