Opened on a forty-seven acre site in Harold's Cross, by the General Cemetery Company of Dublin (which was constituted by an Act of Parliament in 1837), Mount Jerome is one of the most impressive of Dublin's cemeteries. Mentioned in James Joyce's Ulysses, Mount Jerome was the burial ground for many of Dublin's Protestant business men and their families. Unlike most Irish cemeteries, Mount Jerome boasts a large number of highly ornate crypts and memorials. These range from simple urns on columns, to romantic broken columns and weeping angels to large imposing columned structures. A series of sunken roads throughout the grounds allows for below ground access to many of the crypts.

Many well known people are buried here including Thomas Kirke RA who designed and sculpted many funeral monuments during his lifetime notably at St Patricks Church of Ireland, Monaghan; S ir William Wilde - Oscar's father and members of the Guinness family. There is also a large plot to the deceased members of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) and the remains of the French Huguenots from the St Stephens Green Cemetery.

The cemetery operated profitably for many years but was liquidated in 1984 and is now owned by the Massey Undertakers family. There is also a fine gatelodge and mortuary chapel in the grounds.
