Named after the Dublin author James Joyce whose story "The Dead" is set in a house facing the bridge, this is one of two Santiago Calatrava projects planned for Dublin - the other is a bridge further down the river in the docklands. Although this bridge which would swing open to allow ships upriver, has full planning permission, it is now unlikely to be built until 2005. The James Joyce Bridge looks equally fine at night due to its integral lighting.
